CAR NUMBER PLATES Dimensions:1-13/16" x 3-1/2" Early Chevrolet cars & trucks used Car Number Plates to identify where the vehicle was made, which month it was made, show the series and the number of the vehicle as it came off the assembly line. It was not typically used as a vehicle identification number (VIN) since these plates were so easy to remove. Instead, the engine serial number was used as a VIN number. Most early cars had this plate nailed into the seat frame or the floor on the passenger side. For this reason, they are often missing. This rivet was used on Fisher Body cowl tags & paint tags from 1936 and newer, when mounted through a 1/4" hole. On trucks, this rivet was used on the identification plate on the door post or kick panel from 1947 and newer, when mounted through a 1/4" hole. Not used on Bowtie ID plates on early cars & trucks.
