A worn drive shaft bushing causes annoying vibration and excessive wear to the drive shaft and universal joint. A worn seal permits the transmission fluid to drain back to the rear axle - overfilling the differential and causing the transmission to run dry. See also RW-5 drive shaft seal and FS-125 U-joint gasket set.
Remove old front bushing by drilling out the old dowel pin. With a punch, drive the bushing out of the front of the tube. This exposes the old cork seal. Use compressed air or a thin screwdriver to remove the remains of the cork. Lubricate and install the new seal (RW-5 - sold separately) with the lip facing to the transmission. Lubricate the new bushing with gear oil and drive into place. Drill a new hole in the tube and install the dowel pin to lock the bushing in place. Install new ball housing gaskets (FS-125 & FS-4356 - sold separately). Reinstall U-joint and tighten 4 cap screws that hold the collar in place. Fill ball housing with about 1/2 pint of 600 WT gear oil (VT-40) through the plug on top of the rear transmission housing. Check transmission fluid level and fill as necessary.
